POL 341 - Diplomacy in Africa (= CIS 360)

This seminar on diplomacy in Africa is built around four areas of special expertise of the instructor, with focus on causes, effects, and diplomatic approaches to crises in those regions: East Africa (Sudan, Chad, and Djibouti), Central Africa (Eastern Congo and Tanzania), West Africa (Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Togo), North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, and Egypt). Students focus on a theme– violence, gender, religion, resources, poverty, ethnicity, neighbors, colonial/post-colonial concerns, NGOs, China, US, UN, etc –throughout each of the four regions for the course. This is a writing-intensive course.
Satisfies a major requirement in Political Science. Satisfies requirement in Ethnic Studies concentration.
Fulfills Cultural Diversity distribution requirement.
