POL 259 - Special Topics: Religion and Politics

This class takes a broadly comparative approach to the study of religion and politics, focusing on orthodox and heterodox sects of the three major monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity (Eastern and Western Rite), and Islam) as well as both Hinduism and African Religions. Using texts and methods from both religious studies and social sciences, the course examines a variety of debates siting at the intersection of the two: varied practices of secularism, sectarianism, constructions of the ideal state and society, diversity and democracy, and violence/non-violence.
