POL 381 - Philanthropy and the Non-Profit Sector

Multi-disciplinary exploration of the changing roles of the non-profit sector and philanthropy in servcie delivery, advocacy, civic life and public policy.  Focus is primarily on the non-profit sector in the US.  Topics include venture philanthropy; social entrepreneurism; the blurring of government, non-profit, and for-profit sectors; foundations; patterns of giving and volunteerism; best practices in non-profit management; and critiques of philanthropic giving and the non-profit sector.  Includes a lab component of the course, funded by the “Learning by Giving Foundation,” in which students solicit project proposals and allocate $10,000 to local non-profits.

Satisfies the Social-Scientific Thought distribution requirement.
