SOC 235 - Networks and Social Structures

Instructor
Petkova

This course examines the role of social networks in modern society. The course is organized as part lecture; part involved weekly group leadership discussion on theoretical and substantive themes within social network analysis.  The theoretical heart of the approach to social science focuses on the finding that social and economic actors are interdependent. As a sociological phenomenon of fundamental importance to social life, social structure emerges from regularities in this interdependence. In the class, attention will also be paid to joining the conceptual and theoretical development of social networks with methodological tools to implement network research.  By the end of the course, you should (1) know the major theoretical ideas supporting network research, (2) be able to collect social network data and, (3) be able to analyze and interpret social network data.
