SOC 226 - The Criminal

The study of Criminology and Criminal Justice is often anchored in the idea of an objective crime - of the existence of objectively criminal behavior that the society must eradicate or at least lessen.  But the sociological study of critical criminology engages with the ways in which the very idea of criminality cannot be divorced from the marginalization and oppression of groups.  Challenging students to analyze the strategies and methods employed by the dominant to render the subordinate inherently criminal, this class empowers students to challenge prevailing discourse.  Challenging students to analyze the strategies and methods employed by the dominant to rend the subordinate inherently criminal, this class empowers students to challenge prevailing discourse.
