GRE 211 - Homeric Epic: Homeric Hymns

Instructor
Neumann

Composed mostly in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, the ‘Homeric’ hymns offer a varied and delightful glimpse into early views of the Olympian gods in their relations with humans and each other.  We will begin with some of the shorter hymns and progress to the Hymn to Demeter, a deeply affecting poem of great cultural importance in the ancient Greek world, and the delightfully playful Hymn to Hermes.

Satisfies the Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric requirement.
Counts towards the Classical Languages and Literature major and as an elective for the Classical Studies major.
Counts towards the interdisciplinary minor in Global Literary Theory.
