Middle East Studies Concentration

The Middle East Studies Concentration is open to students majoring in any department or program who also wish to pursue the disciplined study of the history, politics, culture and religions of the Middle East

Requirements

 Six courses, including:

 Any four other courses, drawn from the list below or approved by the Director of the Middle East Studies concentration

A depth component.  This can be satisfied in one of three ways:

(a)


By participating in an accredited summer, semester, or year-long study abroad program, either in the Middle East or at an academic institution offering a systematic course of study on Middle Eastern topics (e.g., the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, or Sciences Po–Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Undergraduate College of Menton).

(b)


By taking a research-intensive independent study on a Middle Eastern topic during the junior or senior year.

(c)


By taking a 400-level seminar on a Middle Eastern topic.

Notes


  1. Normally, at least three of the courses must be at the 300-level or above, although the coordinator of the Concentration may approve alternatives.
  2. No more than two courses may also be applied to a departmental major.
  3. The six courses applied to the Concentration must normally come from at least three different departments or programs.
  4. No more than three courses taken abroad may count towards the Middle East Studies Concentration.
  5. A student completing the Arabic language sequence through ARB 202 may substitute that course for one of the six courses for the concentration.
