South Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary minor focusing on an important region of the nonwestern world including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Almost twenty-five percent of the world’s people live in South Asia, and they offer us a rich tapestry of culture, history and socioeconomic contexts.

Interdisciplinary Minor Requirements

Five courses that involve studying the following three aspects are required (see course list below).

1. South Asia’s cultural heritage: two courses offered by different departments.

2. Themes, topics, and perspectives focusing on South Asia: two courses offered by different departments.

3. The connections and discontinuities between South Asia and the rest of the world: one course.

Futher,

a. At least 2 courses must be taken at Davidson,
b. Up to a maximum of 3 courses may be taken at an approved program away from Davidson (either domestically or internationally),
c. No more than 2 courses may be applied to a departmental major, and
d. Normally only one independent study (which must be approved by the Program Head) may be applied to the Interdisciplinary Minor. Such independent studies may include travel away from Davidson for projects related to South Asia and are encouraged.
