REL 178 - Classical Islam

An introduction to Islam and the Muslim world in the classical era (i.e., 7^th through the 13^th century). We will focus particularly on the origins and development of Islamic religious tradition (worldview and practices) and religious and philosophical ideas of this period. We will conclude with observations on trends in Islamic philosophical and religious thought toward the end of the 13^th century, key Muslim thinkers of the classical age, and impact of these seminal intellectual trends on Islamic thought of the post-classical era.
