REL 273 - Catholicism and Shiism

Instructor
Lustig, Zamir

Our study is both a substantial introduction to Catholicism and Shia Islam and a grounded comparison and dialogue between these two religious traditions. Introductions will encompass respective theologies, devotional and spiritual practices, and ethical, philosophical and political thinking in Catholicism and Shiism. We will probe points of convergence and divergence and trace historical and contemporary encounters between the two traditions. Finally, we will examine certain themes such as family (holy and human) and the negotiations of these traditions with western modernity
