REL 178 - Islam: The Formative Era Instructor

An introduction to Islam and the Muslim world from its origins through the formative period (i.e., 7th through the 13th century). We will focus particularly on the origins and development of Islamic religious tradition (worldview and practices) and religious and philosophical ideas of this period. We will conclude with observations on trends in Islamic philosophical and religious thought toward the end of the 13th century, key Muslim thinkers of the classical age, and impact of these seminal intellectual trends on Islamic thought of the post-classical era.
