CLA 255 - Greek and Roman Athletics Instructor

This course investigates the social, religious, political, and entertainment aspects of Greek and Roman Athletics. We will discover the origins and evolution of the Olympic Games, meet the athletic superstars of antiquity, and explore the grand spectacles of the Roman world. Sources include ancient primary texts, like Homer, Pindar, and Livy, material evidence and art (e.g., mosaics, relief sculpture, and archaeological sites), and epigraphic evidence to support our discussion of the victories, defeats, and stalemates that made ancient sport and spectacle so engaging.
Satisfies Historical Thought requirement.
Satisfies Classical Languages and Literature major requirement.
Satisfies Classical Studies major and minor requirement.
