SOC 246 - Sex, Love & Relationships Instructor
Kaufman
In this course, we will examine the sociological meanings and patterns of sex, love, and relationships. We consider the intertwining of sex and sexuality, posing conceptual questions about what sex is and what counts as sex. We look at sex culture on campuses, considering hook culture and dating apps. We then turn to the concept of love, thinking through sociological conceptualizations on a matter that is often seen as a psychological phenomenon, considering how romance narratives shape our expectations. We then consider various forms of relationships, from situationships to cohabitation to marriage, breaking down heteronormative expectations and questioning the stability of marriage as an institution. Finally, we consider arrangements such as living apart together and polyamorous relationships.
