ENG 415 - Art and Narratives, Poetics of Relation

Instructor
Flanagan

Just as painters often use their art to tell stories, paintings have served as inspiration for fiction writers such as Toni Morrison.  In this course, participants will study paintings by several painters whose works appear on what is called an open-air gallery on the island of Djerba, off the coast of Tunisia. Dr. Flanagan will provide the images, and the class will take a virtual tour with one of her colleagues who lives in Djerba.

Participants in this course will compose fictional works-graphics are welcome-based on one or two of the paintings, and will, in the process, engage in discussions of the poetics embedded in the paintings. The best renditions will be submitted as a collection to Bloomsbury Press for publication.
