Religion, Sex, and Power

Gasparowicz

Delve into the intriguing interplay between religion, sexuality, and power in the history of Latin America. This course explores an array of topics, including the Catholic Church’s condemnation of chocolate in the “new world,” the use of religious objects in sexual practices in the colonial world, sexual abuse in the Spanish and British colonies, same-sex relations over time (from the ancient Moche pots to 20th century Mexico City), and cross-dressing (from the Lieutenant Nun to Frida Kahlo). Through the examination of art, music videos, pop culture, primary and secondary sources, we will challenge the notion that religion inherently opposes sexuality. Instead, we will uncover how religious beliefs and institutions across Latin America have deeply shaped sexual expression and societal attitudes.
