ART 102 - Asian Art before 1000

Instructor
Zhang

This course is one of the two survey courses on Asian art exploring the arts in China, Japan, Korea, and India as main focal points. Asian Art Before 1000 covers the temporal scope between the Neolithic time and 1000 CE. The class follows an approximate chronological order with a weekly theme that addresses art history questions ranging from funerary art and the afterlife to gender and transcultural perspectives. Compared to the other survey course, Asian Art After 1000, Asian Art Before 1000 prominently features three-dimensional works of art, including cast bronze vessels, stone carvings, and sculptures. Methodologically, this course offers more opportunities to explore the intersections between art history, archaeology, and material culture studies.
