REL 331 - Job in Art, Tradition, and Thought Instructor
Swenson-Lengyel
Of the books of the Hebrew Bible, few match the Book of Job for poetic brilliance and theological, existential probing. In this course, we will explore the book itself, as well as its reception history across more than two millennia–in theology and biblical studies, but also in visual art, literature, theater, and film. From Augustine to William Blake to Elie Wiesel, students will have the opportunity to learn about diverse engagements with the text and will themselves become part of an ongoing, lively and contested interpretive discourse about the book and character of Job.
