Developments in painting and sculpture that occurred from 1890–1955. From the reaction against Impressionism through Abstract Expressionism. Developments in western Europe during this period and parallel developments occurring in Russia and the United States. Participation in a study tour of the appropriate modern art museums in Washington, D.C., and New York during the semester break is an integral part of the course and, as such, is strongly recommended.
