Middle East Studies Interdisciplinary Minor

The Middle East Studies interdisciplinary minor is open to students majoring in any department or program who also wish to pursue the disciplined study of the history, politics, culture and religions of the Middle East.

Requirements


  1. Six Courses, including:
    1. Either HIS 175 or HIS 176 (or the equivalent)
    2. REL 272 (or the equivalent)
    3. Any four other courses, drawn from the course list below or approved by the Director of the Middle East Studies Interdisciplinary Minor
  2. A depth component.  This can be satisfied in one of the following three ways:
    1. By participating in an accredited summer, semester- or year-long study abroad program, either in the Middle East or at an academic institution offering a systematic course of study on Middle Eastern topics (e.g., the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, or Sciences Po- Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Undergraduate College of Menton)
    2. By taking a research-intensive independent study on a Middle Eastern topic during the junior or senior year
    3. By taking a 400-level seminar on a Middle Eastern topic

Notes


  1. Normally, at least three of the courses must be at the 300-level or above, although the coordinator of the interdisciplinary minor may approve alternatives.
  2. No more than two courses may also be applied to a departmental major.
  3. The six courses applied to the interdisciplinary minor must normally come from at least three different departments or programs.
  4. No more than three courses taken abroad may count towards the Middle East Studies Interdisciplinary Minor.
  5. A student completing the Arabic language sequence through ARB 202 may substitute that course for one of the six courses for the interdisciplinary minor.
