ENG 260 - British Literature since 1800

Vaz-Hooper:  English 260 will provide you with a solid historical introduction to the poetry and prose texts of a little more than two centuries of British literature beginning with the Romantic Period and concluding with the twentieth century. We will focus on specific authors, like Mary Wollstonecraft, William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Oscar Wilde, T. S. Eliot, and Eavan Boland in order to study how they exemplify or complicate our understanding of literary history. 

Churchill:  This course covers more than two centuries of British literature, from the Romantic period, through the Victoria Era, into the modernist period, and concluding with contemporary literature.  The course has several aims:  to provide an overview of British literary history from 1800 to the present day; to investigate the process of canon formation and the writing of literary history; to synthesize material across genres and eras; and to promote critical and original thought through discussion, writing assignments, and exams. 

Students entering before 2012:  satisfies the Literature distribution requirement.
Students who major in English should complete 260 by the end of the junior year. Those who cannot meet this deadline must make special arrangements with the Chair.
