ENG 240 - Lit Origins of Race and Colony

This course examines the central roles of race and colonialism in the formation of English literary and national identity. We will survey the long history of racism and the colonial imagination in English literature, from the medieval legends of King Arthur to the eighteenth-century autobiography of the formerly enslaved abolitionist Olaudah Equiano. Over the course of the semester, we will read some of the most famous works of English poetry, prose, and performance.
