ENG 282 - African American Literature: 1955 and Beyond (=AFR 282)

This course introduces students to some of the literature African Americans produced during the crucial years of the modern civil rights movement. Works by Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Haki Madhubuti, Ishmael Reed, Al Young, Wanda Coleman, Malcolm X, and others will be studied alongside major connecting moments in the struggle for civil liberties, and for their introduction of new literary modes into the American canon.

Satisfies the Diversity requirement of the English major.
