PHI 350 - Evolution and Morality Instructor
Studtmann
Since the publication of The Origin of Species, philosophers and scientists have explored the implications of evolution for human morality. Did morality evolve alongside other aspects of human behavior? Does our evolutionary history lend support to specific moral frameworks, or does it challenge the very foundation of morality? In this course, we will explore these questions by engaging with contemporary philosophical works and examining key game-theoretic insights from evolutionary biology. Through discussions and readings, we aim to deepen our understanding of how morality may have evolved and the broader philosophical issues this raises.
Satisfies the seminar requirement for the Philosophy major.
Prerequisites & Notes This course can be repeated for credit given sufficiently distinct topics: check with the department chair. (Fall, Spring)
