A topical survey of musical thought and practice in the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular attention paid to notions of innovation in a musical context, their origins and effects: the exploration of extended techniques and exploitation of new technology; the influence of an increasingly mechanized sonic environment; concordant movements in art and philosophy; emerging notions of an Avant Garde; and evolving social constructions of composer, performer, and audience.
Satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
