SOC 227 - Global Cities and Urbanism

Instructor
Jung

This course explores urban transformations of the megacities in the global South. A study of global cities and their relations to emerging urbanism grows out of a simple question: “What is the source of changes to this city?” Colonialism, developmentalism, and neoliberalism remain important analytical lenses for understanding urban transformation in the global South. Through a close examination of urban transformations on these analytic perspectives, this course delves into the following topics in the global cities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America: uneven development and displacement, speculation and gentrification, governance and activism, informalization and racialization, and urban pop culture and lifestyle.
