Rewriting Gender: Pre 1800 Spanish Literature
Instructor
Willis
The class explores representations of gender roles in Early Modern Spanish/Latin American texts (15th-17th centuries), most centrally, in literary and historical narratives, though to a lesser degree, in paintings as well. The central focus of the class is works in which traditional expectations of gender and sexuality are upended. Comparatively exploring depictions of women in texts created by men with those authored by female artists, we better appreciate the dissidence of Early Modern female-and non-binary-authors. Moreover, we will examine relevant theories and historical texts dedicated to GSS of the historical period.
